Video Refereeing for football: Should it be used or not.

Should there be video refereeing?

            In football games, from past to present, referees are the important factor who could change the game within a second. Penalty shootout or red card can flip the game from loosing to winning. The crucial decision from the referees effects the players, the fans and of course to the clubs, especially in big competitions like Champions League or World Cup, it could change someone’s life.

            So as years go by, more and more people request FIFA (Federation International de Football Association) to consider using video evidence to help human referees decide what they should do to the game. But why FIFA says ‘no’? Will this double-edge sword technology ruin the classicism of football, or will it help referees to avoid being in the spotlight? 

Too often the wrong decision leads to wrong results?

            In football matches you’ll find even the best and most accepted referees make totally wrong decisions, even have a complete horrible match from time to time. Modern football matches have become so close that referee decisions have become more and more crucial to the match. Also the game has become faster so that you have a higher number of controversial situations. The only answer has been more referee fitness, a better education and better judgment from the fourth officials.

            But in early 90’s, video referee became one of the choices for decrease the percentage of wrong decision from human referees.  When it comes time to make a decision, the referee will watch the replays on a video monitor before choosing the appropriate decision. This is a reasonable solution for many football managers.

            Arsenal football club’s manager Arsene Wenger backs the calls for referees to use video technology after the recent controversies caused by particular person called referee. "If you love football you want justice to be respected. It becomes suspicious when people see things that don't happen. With a video you can check, why refuse when the help is there? It becomes a weakness from referees if they don't accept it”, said Wenger.

Mark Hughes, the manager from Blackburn football club who agree with Wenger’s comment said, "I've never been an advocate of technology but sooner rather than later they should bring it in"

“The assistant referee telephoned to say sorry - it is a nice gesture but it won't get the goal wiped off” Said England manager, Steve McClaren.

Some says there’s no reason to refuse this technology. But why some says it will ‘kill football’?

Will video refereeing ruin classic football?

          Despite the fact it would help cut down on referee's mistakes, former top referee David Elleray does not flavor using video technology, saying it spoils the drama and flow of a match. “One of the greatest attractions of football over almost any other sport is that it's almost non-stop action,” said Elleray.

            What will happen if the referees are too careful too make their own decisions in a crucial match and always depend their judgments on video evidence?

If using the video technology cause many breaks in the match, it means the main enjoyment from this sport will be ruined.

            “Soccer lives by its fluent course and its dynamic outbursts. It might even become a tool to complain and to ask for a video refereeing to calm down, to interrupt a match that is running well for the others side, this is why FIFA refuse to use video refereeing,” said FIFA spokesman.

            Furthermore, football has a classicism called ‘Home’ and  ‘Away’. When you play in your own stadium in front of your fans that yelling at the referee, it definitely affects his mind and leads to advantage decision for home team and disadvantage result for away team. The statistic shows more than 60% of home team can get away with murder by pressure from the crowded supporters on the stadium to the referees. It might seem unfair but it’s a charm of football that will fade away if video technology comes in.

There is a place for video technology at the top level of the game?

                 However, FIFA didn’t say no for every technology. They already organized to trial inserting a microchip inside the ball to determine whether the ball has crossed the goal line, by being able to pinpoint its exact location on the pitch. And if the test is considered successful, the micro-chipped ball will be used in the Carling Cup final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium the following day, on February 27^th 2007.

 “The only thing that could be considered is the technology to decide whether the ball has crossed the line or not. The FA (Football Association) is willing to discuss and consider any form of goal-line technology that would improve decision-making while not disrupting the game", said FIFA director of communications, Markus Siegler.

So if video refereeing becomes the real thing in football game. It will absolutely be the topic discussed widely over the world. Because football is the most famous sport as it’s a language everyone can speak. Who knows, the final answer might be invented tomorrow and satisfy everyone!
